HER

Moose are animals not to be trifled with or underestimated at any time. As a dogsled guide in my younger, more fit years, we would encounter them quite often. The speed that they can move through waist deep snow is terrifying if they decide to bear down on you. A team of dogs does not dissuade them and you can tell an adult moose would trample you all if it felt properly threatened.

I met this female Moose in Northern British Columbia along a short trail to a viewpoint I had stopped to see. She was quite far away at first, yet her body language said I was intruding and she kept making moves in my direction and posturing. I took a few photos and calmly returned to my truck but she still moved towards me. I could not see a calf anywhere though I am fairly sure that one was nearby.

I came to a clearing close to the truck and decided to put the truck between her and me while still hoping that she would give me a good pose and decide that I was not worth bloodying her hooves. She walked across the grasses into the sun, stared for a moment, and turned one last time to tell me to go away with one last blistering look.
