BISON OF THE FOREST

Spring-time never fails to awaken all of the senses that have been dormant through the Winter. I have a bad habit of getting out too early with far too much excitement that everywhere I go is going to be vibrant and teeming with activity as the days become longer and life returns to sleeping grasses and forests.

Living in the mountains can be deceiving in April/May. You look out the window and see brown on grey colour everywhere while weather forecasts speak of warmer days only an hour's drive away. Trailers pulling boats go by on the highway heading west and you leave your house in a down jacket in the morning only to be in a t-shirt again by midday.

So I always leave the mountains and head to the grasslands or lower elevations to just get that blast of spring warmth and colour as it works its way closer to home. Camping in May has all the smells and observing newborn calves and other animals takes me back to being a kid and watching all the nature documentaries on cold rainy days on the Coast.

Bison are one of my favourite since they have such a fuzzy and playful look. Mix in the vibrant new growth and they can be a blast to photograph. The adults do not look at you after a certain point, but the young are still curious.
